How to Be Productive Over Winter Break Those last assignments are turned in and the final exams have been taken. Fall semester has come to a close and the freedom of winter break is finally upon you. Now the question is: what do you with it? What do you do with so much free time when are you are free from worries of schoolwork? Most students take the position of relaxing doing absolutely nothing else. There is certainly nothing wrong with that; after all, you deserve it after all the hard work youve done. But for those of you who want to accomplish something a little more, how can you best take advantage of this time off? There are plenty of ways to use this break so you can feel like youve done something positive for your academic life and have made yourself somehow better prepared for the semester ahead of you. Although you initially may want to avoid doing any work at all over this next month, youd be surprised at how quickly you can find yourself extremely bored at home when there is no school to keep you busy. You dont need to be doing something heavy every day, but a few side projects to keep you intrigued can be a good idea. Of course there is no shortage of things to do to keep yourself entertained over break, but wouldnt it be nice to know that some of the activities youre taking part in will improve your schooling experience? Just think about how relieved and content youll feel when you return to that first day of classes knowing that you have already taken care of some pressing needs for your academic support system. What are these needs exactly? They can be anything from getting the best deals on textbooks, to purchasing new notebooks, to reviewing the class syllabus, to familiarizing yourself with your schedule. This is the part where you can get creative and figure out what helps you personally in the classroom. What gets you excited for school? What makes the learning process easier for you? If these questions are left until that first week back, youll probably be far too overwhelmed with all of the back-to-school commotion to really be able to focus on answering them. In situations like this, you look back and wonder why you didnt take advantage of all that free time when you had it That is why it is best for you to make a priority list right away when your break begins so you have clear ideas of what you want to accomplish and how to get them done. Sometimes it feels great to just go out and buy all new supplies for the next semester. However, sometimes it can also feel good to use up what you have. Perhaps you have a notebook that was barely written in past its first three pages from fall semester instead of throwing it out, just rip out the first few used pages and label it for a different class. You may be able to accumulate a lot of fresh supplies just by breaking down the items you already have. On the same token, however, dont always use certain supplies just because you already have them. If your highlighters are quickly drying out, go ahead and buy a new set. No need to feel obligated to suffer through that annoyance until the very last stroke of color. Have both sets on hand so nothing goes to waste, but that you are still prepared for a final malfunction at a moments notice. Most importantly, think carefully about what kind of note-taking each of your classes will require of you and assign various supplies accordingly. Make sure you have a notebook with hundreds of pages for that math class you know will be asking you to solve problem after problem and save those lesser-paged notebooks for other courses that are more discussion based. Here,  Saint Augustine, FL music teacher  Heather L. offers some helpful tips to help you get through the tricky parts Have you ever found yourself sitting in a big concert hall, or in your room, listening to a soloist play a practically perfect rhythm? Almost all of us have, and almost all of us have asked ourselves, How do they do that? Their secret is subdivision. You might be just beginning with learning to read music, or you might have been reading for decades. Either way, chances are that you agree with many musicians that reading pitches is one thing, but reading rhythms is quite another. Rhythm can be what separates some of us from believing in our sight reading abilities. Learning Your Note Value Family Tree As you learn to read music, subdivision is the key to understanding what every note means, rhythmically. You could think of subdivision as a sort of X-ray vision for rhythm, allowing you to see the inner structure of each note. You see, every single note is made up of smaller, or shorter notes. What you see here is a simple drawing of the hierarchy of notes, if you will. In a way, its kind of a note value family tree. At the top, you see a whole note. A whole note is made up of two half notes. Each half note is made up of two quarter notes. Every quarter note is made up of two  eighth  notes. Each of those eighth  notes is made up of two sixteenth notes. If you were to count all of the sixteenth notes at the bottom, then youd find sixteen of them. There are sixteen sixteenth notes in a whole note. Got that? Writing Counts Into Your Music Okay, below is first line of Beethovens Ode to Joy, only underneath each note youll see that Ive written a combination of numbers and plus signs. Each number and each plus sign represents an eighth note. Count out loud, saying, One and two and three and four and If I were to sing this, then Id sing the same thing on the appropriate pitches. By steadily counting every eighth note as you read the music, youre instantly more accurate. Youll no longer be guessing at how long to hold each note. This is especially important when it comes to something like what you see in measure four above. Instead of thinking to yourself, That dotted quarter note is one and a half beats, youll think to yourself, That dotted quarter note is three eighth notes. Instead of thinking to yourself, That half note is two beats long, youll think to yourself, That half note is four eighth notes long. When I have a really tough song to learn, Ill write the counts underneath, just like I did in Ode to Joy above. Whats really cool about subdivision is that it can be used in music that has even sixteenth and thirty-second notes! Counting sixteenth notes means saying, ONE-ee-and-uh-TWO-ee-and-uh Every note has a specific number of sixteenth notes inside it. Just count as many as you need. Though all this may sound tedious, it actually makes learning to read music so much easier. Instead of a vague feeling or intuition about how long or short notes are, youve got a solid understanding of how every single note is constructed. The first of these two elements, story, is a series of events involving entities, with a beginning, middle, and end. The entities in the story can be sentient, such as in stories about people or human-like talking animals, or entities can be insentient, such as stories about the formation of the solar system, in which the entities are non-human and incapable of acting with intent. The second element of a narrative is the presentation of the story, sometimes called the narrative discourse, which is the particular way a story is told. If you have ever read a book and seen the movie adaptation, you might observe that the story was essentially the same but the film and book versions were different renderingsâ€"two narratives about the same story. First, Second, or Third Person Narration To illustrate, if four writers were to agree on a series of events involving the same entities, but then went off to separate rooms to write the story, each would produce a different narrative because the presentation of those events would inevitably be different. One author might choose to write the story using first-person narration, “I woke up late.” The second author might choose instead to use third person narration, “He woke up late.” The third author might choose to use third-person omniscient narration, “No one in the galaxy cared that he had woken up late.” Alternatively, a fourth author might choose to experiment with second-person narration, “You have woken up late.” Each produces a different narrative effect in the mind of the reader. First person narration feels true. When the story is about the narrator, it seems autobiographical, even if the story is fiction. Readers tend to construct an idea of the author in the process of reading and begin to think that we know something about him or her by the end. This inferred author may, in fact, be nothing like the real author. In fiction, we should remember that the narrator is an invention of the authorâ€"a tool used to tell the story. The illusion created by first-person narration, however, can be so convincing and so complete for readers that many can come away from a book worrying about the mental health of the author. Such was the case when Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita first appeared. At the time, misconceptions about the author were so pervasive that Nabokov felt it necessary to add an afterword to a later edition of his novel to emphasize that he was not anything like the murderous Humbert and did not share his narrator’s predilection for 12-year-old girls . Narrative Distance It is easier to distinguish between the author and the narrator in third person narration. The third-person narrator can exist outside of the storyworld as a non-character or participate in a small way as a minor character. The degree of involvement in the story is called narrative distance, and it is variable from narrative to narrative. Hemingway wrote third-person narration with “complete emotional non-involvement” (Abbott, 2008, p. 75). His narrator always remains distant from the action. He describes but does not judge. He reports. In contrast, Nelly Dean, the narrator of Wuthering Heights, participates as a minor character, commenting and expressing sympathies in a story that is, for her, still in progress. A reader can judge the emotional distance of the narrator by counting the number of adjectives employed. With the exception of descriptive adjectives denoting size, shape, or number, the presence of evaluative adjectives let us know that the narrator cares and feels. It is possible to tell a story using second person narration. It has been done, but it is rare. Balzac writes, “You hold this book in your white hand, lying back in a softly cushioned armchair, saying to yourself, ‘Perhaps this one is amusing.’” Being addressed by the narrator in this way creates a relationship between the reader and the narrator, however hostile. Jay McInerney’s narrator maintains more distance, making the reader a protagonist in his story. He writes, “At one o’clock, you go out for a sandwich. Megan asks you to bring her a Tab. Downstairs, you semi-revolve through the doors and think how nice it would be not to return, ever” (McInerney, 1984, p. 27). Second person narration like this is more common in hypertext fiction. The effect of second-person narration is strange, to say the least. Person, distance, and narrator all take time to develop and understand. As we have seen, there are dangers, too.
